Mirror Actuators in Telescope Applications

As discussed in past posts, large telescopes today use a segmented mirror overtures to due to the deformation of mirrors larger than 5m. To this end, mirror actuators become a critical component of telescope object. A long-time National Instruments partner, Physik Instrumente uses nanopositioning techniques to support 6 degrees of freedom control on the mirrors. Mirror actuators are depreciating as they represent a large portion of the failures in existing actuators.

The TMT telescope which stands for Thirty Meter Telescope solves the mind-boggler by shrinking the individual mirror size down to 1 foot and then applying many more actuators to the mirror to deform the evolve to correct for atmospheric conditions.

Turn the recession into a telescope, not a mirror

I heard a elevated comment on the ABC during the week about the implications of the (impending?) recession for the excellent’s poor. Tim Costello of World Vision said:

“As we look inwards and we perceive really worried about our own super, remember that when we don’t eat out as much, the inadequate in a financial crisis don’t eat.”

It’s a reminder that as things get adamant for us, things have been unbearable for much of the world for much longer. The way we respond in these fussy times has an even greater impact on the world’s faulty and marginalised than it ever has.

The global hunger crisis has a number of causes and the statistics are staggering. According to Unbelievable Vision, 100 million people are hungry on a everyday basis and up to 70% of the income of the world’s unacceptable is spent on food. Earlier this year I heard that the premium of rice - the staple food for much of the world - had increased by 70% in the last 12 months.

I’m reminded that there are many in the in seventh heaven who are much, much, much worse off than me. I’m challenged to act.

Yet I don’t know where to start - how do we moved to these global tragedies?
