Just posted! Pentax 50mm F1.4 lens review

By the skin of one's teeth posted! Our new lens review featuring the Pentax smc P-FA 50mm 1:1.4. This is the latest in our on-prospering series scrutinising the optical credentials of the camera manufacturers' a number of "fast fifties", and looks at a lens which has been around since the days of 35mm coating. Designed as a fast 'standard' prime, it's now being pressed into post as a short portrait telephoto on the APS-C sensor. So how well has it adapted to this new r?

What Pentax lenses and body in (this bad) picture?

Luminary is selling a Pentax SLR and two lenses at a local Ebay-like purlieus and only provides this bad photo. The seller doesn't specify what the gearbox in question is and as you see, the photo doesn't help much either. I assume the seller isn't providing more info or answers to questions due to being clueless about selling on the web more than being anxious. However, I'll keep an eye on this and if it's going dirt cheap, I might take a chance.

So, what do you think the supplies in question is? The short (prime?) lens seems to have a Takumar text and I contrive the other one is a ***-135mm zoom. And the body?

Any help appreciated.

Pentax smc FA 50mm 1:1.4 review

If you've already announce our reviews of either the Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM or the Nikon AF-Nikkor 50mm F1.4D, then our findings for the Pentax twin won't come as much of a surprise. Clearly the conclusions are a little brief in comparison, as Pentax currently only offer APS-C format DSLRs, but the lens's properties are to the nth degree similar. This simply reflects the quality and maturity of the 7 locale 6 group, all-spherical 50mm F1.4 general design; the three lenses show discrete strengths and weaknesses, but overall are more similar than they are different.

The standout peculiarity of the Pentax is arguably it's extremely low distortion, which is the lowest of the 50mm F1.4s we've tested. And when the space is stopped down to F2.2 or smaller, it's impressively sharp corner-to-corner, liberty across the APS-C frame. It's important to understand here that the 50mm F1.4 is much sharper than representative consumer zooms; even at F2.8 it surpasses both the DA 16-45mm 1:4 ED AL and the DA 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 AL bullet at 45mm and their optimum apertures around F8.

However this excellent showing when stopped down does succeed at the cost of an unconvincing performance at large apertures; the lens is very diffused indeed at F1.4, and while we described the Canon 50mm F1.4 as 'dreamy', the Pentax renders scenes more as though you're looking through a outstanding veil of mist. This is accompanied by a distinctly problematic execution of out-of-focus backgrounds, to which it imparts a jarringly hard-edged publication and substantial levels of green/magenta chromatic aberration. This in give back slightly limits the lens's usefulness for shallow depth of mead portrait use, an application for which the (much more expensive) Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM is rather think twice suited. Indeed it will be interesting to see how Pentax have chosen to design the recently-announced DA* 55mm F1.4 SDM, which is described as being explicitly suitable for portraiture.

So in summary,...

I am in full blown LBA buying modes. I don't penury a long glass as I do have a Tamron 70-300 Di LD Macro that sufficient for my need in 300mm and with the Pentax F-1.7x AF TC and Tamron Pz-AF 1.4x TC, I can go to 340mm and 510mm the overpriced of losing 1.5 and 1 aperture full stops.

When I see the combined vending from another Pentaxian with Pentax F-1.7x AF TC, I went for this 300mm, which many have called the fitting 300mm on the budget minded. I bought way too many lens that I can afford to probe. It is such a shame that I only tested this lens on Veteran day where I can't ship out the lens to a wonderful client. Test shots from far away objects are awesome sharp, even wide open in f/4.0 aperture. It is a monotonous lens and it has a long length and without tripod colar but I still find it very useable in readily-holding for far distance in the 1/2 mile range. I find myself looking for invigorating the hands in taking the shot. All test shots are done proffer-held fashion with some bracing on a rail. Ideally, I look for a supine wall to back me up...

10 Cameras for Design Research

People getting into pattern research often wonder what gear they need. While there’s some intriguing concepts for dedicated research hardware, a camera and a notebook are enough to do large things. You may not be tackling complex ethnographic study, or a gravelly time and motion analysis, but for gaining insight into verified world context, getting out of your office and being with your users is keystone and isn’t rocket science. Like many dedicated enquire consultants point out, being *good* at field work takes exercise and dedication. But getting started just takes getting out the door and looking at the fraternity in a different way. And sometimes, to capture that different way, you need a camera. But which one? As a photogeek, I go camera hardware, play with new models in the store, and own a several of my own. This roundup isn’t meant to be definitive (and like all things accessories related, it will change in a month or three). But I hope you find it useful point of view about your own work and the kind of tools that will best suit you as you go out into the creation and start to gain the insights to design things speculator.

While many researchers use camcorders to capture their work, video critique is a huge time suck, and often yields similar insights as you’ll get with a camera, notebook, and sometimes an audio recorder. So for this epitomization, I’ve focused on cameras that are primarily still cameras, though most of them also do duplicated duty and can capture short video segments.

With the multitude of choices and situations, there’s no such trend as the one best camera (though I have a favorite that I’ll share in a two shakes of a lamb's tail log). A camera for design research has to meet many needs (sometimes ambivalent needs). Discreet: you will get a more authentic record of your observations when people are not overwhelmed by a monumental camera. Discreet cameras lend themselves to more candid...
