Birds in flight photography, Nikon D700

I exhausted an hour today stalking a Red-shouldered Hawk exasperating to get a good shot of her in flight. Here’s what I learned:

Spring up in Manual or Shutter Priority mode

I had plenty of jovial, and a fast (F/2.8) telephoto lens, but I had the camera in Chasm priority at F/4.0, so my shutter speeds were in the 1/1000 to 1/1600 extend most of the time. I thought that was fast enough, but it wasn’t.  If I had to take the shots over again, I’d have it set to 1/4000 or dialect mayhap even faster.  Remember, Vibration Reduction or Impression Stabilization only helps counteract hand shake. You’re still tracking a sybaritically-flying bird with a long lens.  I had oodles of ISO “to burn,” so I should have used that to get a faster shutter belt along.

Use 3-D tracking for autofocus

Obviously I was in “C” Endless focusing mode, but I had selected the “use all points” status for picking the focusing point. That’s the one that looks like a stainless rectangle. It wasn’t fast enough, and it got confused by things like trees and power lines that came into the incident as I tracked the hawk.  I got some much better pictures of another bird using the 3-D tracking trend, which looks like a cross-hair. How that works is that you have a focus headland highlighted in the viewfinder (it defaults to the center one). As the action starts, put that nave point on the subject, and press and hold the AF-ON button. That tells the camera what you be deficient in to focus on. Keep that held down, and track with the camera. Watch as the blurry point moves around, following the subject as it moves around within the raise. Shoot away.  I found this mode to be extremely careful, and it didn’t get confused when a bird flew over a power specialty.

Nikon D700

I recently upgraded to the D700 Nikon camera from the D300. I'm loving the considerable ISO goodness that this camera delivers. It's truly amazing! This jigger didn't need high iso but I shot it at 1000 (not precisely on purpose) and many more that turned out very nice. ISO 1600 the
shots of the boy below, one is at best cropped in on the same shot to see the detail. A truly magnificent camera, I'm now shooting with the new 24-70 Nikkor lens. The sharpness and limpidity this lens has over my last lens is remarkable. It really does return a difference.
